The Challenge

Recently, one family filed challenges to 25 books — some of which were deemed not to require any action — overwhelming the Fairfax County Public Schools challenged materials process. The challenges were lodged at individual schools, but are for systemwide action. The following is a list of the book titles, author and school receiving the challenge.

* "A Thousand Pieces of Gold," Ruthanne Lum McCunn, Irving Middle School;

* "Growing Up Chicano," Tiffany Ana Lopez, Irving Middle;

* "Shogun," James Clavell, Lanier Middle School;

* "I Was A Teenage Fairy," Francesca Lia Block, Poe Middle;

School;

* "Tenderness," Robert Cormier, Groveton Elementary School;

* "The Rose and The Beast," Francesca Lia Block, Groveton Elementary School;

* "Girl Goddess #9," Francesca Lia Block, Groveton Elementary School;

* "A Time for Dancing," Davida Wills Hurwin, Oakton Elementary School;

* "Witch Baby," Francesca Lia Block, Springfield Estates Elementary School;

* "Fallen Angeles," Walter Dean Myers, Waynewood Elementary School;

* "Chocolate War," Robert Cormier, Halley Elementary School.

The following challenges do not require action because the book has already been removed or is located in the Professional Collection, which cannot be accessed by students.
