Herndon High

On Saturday, Nov. 2 at 10 a.m., NBC aired Herndon High School competing against teams from Damascus and Maret High Schools on the local academic quiz show, “It’s Academic.” The students were asked a variety of academic questions about math, history and literature and other various subjects.

Students from the Herndon academic team included team captain junior Cory MacDonald and seniors Eric Sollenberger and James Steale. Junior Javed Mondal was the alternate for the event. Herndon cheerleaders also attended the show’s taping to support the team.

Academic team sponsor, Dr. James Hull explained the team’s performance on the show. “We could see until half-time they [Herndon] were very competitive, but then after the halfway point the other teams were just

quicker.”

Herndon’s academic team, which proved to be strong competition for the other schools in the first half, eventually lost to Maret High School in the match.

According to Hull, the team is comprised of mainly upperclassmen. New recruits of freshmen and sophomores are needed for the team.

After now competing on “It’s Academic,” Herndon’s team is preparing for other upcoming competitions. The team will attend a county competition held in the winter and various other competitions, which will be sponsored by local high schools in the area.
