The Rev. Mike Colon was installed as associate pastor at the Jubilee Christian Center on Nov. 3 by Senior Pastor Bill Frasnelli. Previously, Colon served as interim senior pastor, associate pastor and youth pastor at the First Assembly of God Church in Alexandria. He is ordained by the Potomac District Council of the Assemblies of God. A graduate of American University, Colon, his wife Sonja and their two daughters reside in Springfield. Among his other duties, Colon will be ministering to college, singles and young married adults and will coordinate a new inter-generational ministry at Jubilee.

A Thanksgiving Eve Service will take place at the Jubilee Christian Center on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 7:30 p.m. Associate Pastor Mike Colon will be speaking. Jewish Social Service Agency presents Families in Transition, a six-session group for parents to explore ways to help their children cope with separation and divorce. Mondays, Dec. 2-Jan. 20, 7-8:30 p.m., at 3018 Javier Road, second floor, Fairfax. 703-204-9100, x11. $200.

Little River United Church of Christ, Annandale, continues its First Friday season on Dec. 6 with a program, Pizza and Puppets, featuring the KDPuppets. Older children, ages 7-11, will assist in preparing and performing a puppet play for the younger children, ages 3-6. An appropriate snack meal will be served, including punch. First Friday is a cooperative parents-night-out program for the whole community. Children 6 months through sixth grade get an evening of safe fun and good food, and parents get an evening of freedom. The program runs 6:30-9:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per child ($15 per family) for each session. Future First Friday programs are scheduled for the first Friday of February, March and April. Congregation Adat Reyim will be hosting a Hanukkah Party for families with children up to the third grade, Sunday, Dec. 8, 3-5 p.m., at Congregation Adat Reyim, 6500 Westbury Oaks Court, Springfield.

The Little River United Church of Christ, 8410 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, invites the community to join in celebrating the Christmas Season at its Advent Gala, Dec. 8, from 4-6 p.m. There will be activities for all persons and all ages, including Christmas crafts, stories, caroling, snacks, hanging of the greens and a brief worship service. Messiah United Methodist Church will be hosting its annual free concert of Handel's "Messiah, Part I," including the "Hallelujah Chorus," on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. The concert will be presented by a community chorus under the direction of Roger Miller, director of music ministries at Messiah. The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area presented the Blue Ribbon Award to Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church of Burke on Oct. 26. The award recognized Accotink's efforts in raising more than $1,300 in a special collection that helped to remove mines from a minefield in Afghanistan while U.S. troops were fighting there last February. Ed Jaffee and Pete Fontneau, both of Springfield, accepted the award on behalf of the AUUC congregation and as members of its Social Concerns Committee.

A special service of Advent music will be presented Dec. 8, during the 10 a.m. Worship Service, Springfield Christian Church, 5407 Backlick Road, Springfield; and Dec. 15, during the 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Worship Services, Little River United Church of Christ, 8410 Little River Turnpike, Annandale. Christ the Redeemer Episcopal Church will help Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia to build a townhouse on Stevenson Street in Fairfax City for a family in need. The project is a joint effort between Habitat for Humanity and Region 7, a group of Episcopal churches within the Diocese of Virginia. Christ the Redeemer will be working on the house Dec. 7. There will also be workdays scheduled on various Wednesdays throughout November. The Celebration Singers, a costumed and choreographed, all-volunteer, women's show chorus, invites singers to join them. The group sings a variety of music in three voice ranges — soprano, second soprano and alto.
