The Herndon Dulles Business and Professional Women’s Club will celebrate National Business Women’s Week at its Woman of the Year Award Dinner scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 6:30-9 p.m., at Amphora’s Diner Deluxe, 1151 Elden St.

The American Red Cross will offer CPR and first aid classes at 1112 Herndon Parkway on Oct. 12 (9 a.m.-6 p.m.), 14 and 15 (6-10:30 p.m.). The course includes instruction on how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, how to perform rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to assist choking victims and how to care for life-threatening bleeding, sudden illness and injuries. Inova VNA Home Health needs volunteers to act as friendly visitors to lonely, homebound patients. Volunteers spend one to two hours a week talking to the patients, running errands and doing odd jobs.

A Smoke-Free Dining Guide for Reston and Herndon was recently published by the Northern Virginia Alliance on Smoking or Health (NOVASH). The guide tells residents which restaurants have a smoke-free environment. Three Wishes Program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens (65 years and up) and the permanently disabled with no cost to the recipient if they qualify. The power wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair in their home, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. Volunteers play a key role in the Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program’s provision of advocacy services to recipients of long-term care in the region.

The volunteer is assigned to a specific nursing home or assisted living facility, and makes weekly visits. Using the skills of listening, observing and mediating, the ombudsman works with the residents, their families and the staff of the facility to ensure that the residents’ rights are being protected.

Applicants must successfully complete the training session and must be available to volunteer four hours per week, primarily during business hours. Training sessions are held regularly.
