Cleveland Makes It Official

Alexandria Vice Mayor Bill Cleveland ended months of speculation by announcing that he will run for mayor in 2003.

Cleveland made the announcement at the Oct. 3, meeting of the Alexandria Republican City Committee. “After much discussion with my wife and a lot of prayer, I have decided to run for mayor of Alexandria,” Cleveland said. “I have served on City Council for 14 years and have a track record of reliable, proven leadership.”

Cleveland also said that it is time that Alexandrians have a choice. “Alexandrians have not had a real choice for mayor since 1994,” he said. “I want to give the citizens that choice.”

His initial statement on his agenda was broad. “I want the citizens to know that I plan to continue to focus on the things that are important to them,” he said. “My priority will be on preserving neighborhoods, looking carefully at development and on the quality of life that Alexandrians want.”

The election will be held in May 2003.
