Students Trek Back to Classrooms

There were some minor glitches related to construction and transportation, but in general, all went well as Alexandria’s 11,000 public school students returned to school Tuesday.

The construction at Francis C. Hammond Middle School is nearly complete but teachers spent last week moving into newly-carpeted, freshly painted rooms with brand new furniture. Students appeared to be more interested in greeting old friends and admiring their sparkling surroundings than in the fact that there are still some things to be unpacked and put together.

Meanwhile, at George Washington Middle School, construction has only just begun. Busses were on time bringing students to school and the students managed to get around construction and between buildings with only a bit of confusion. Students and teachers understand that it may take a bit longer than usual to get from the main building to gym and to classes in the Annex but there are hall monitors outside to ensure that those class changes go smoothly.

Superintendent Rebecca Perry, beginning her second school year at the helm of the system, welcomed students back to school. “Many exciting programs and activities are planned for our students to keep them challenged and engaged in learning,” Perry said.

“I encourage your family to get involved and stay connected with your child’s school.”
