Dumais worked intensively on two bills during the past session.
One modified the grounds for absolute divorce, the other strengthened probation terms for people convicted of drunk and drugged driving.
As a family law attorney, Dumais was particularly interested in divorce law. “I enjoyed the intellectual debate that went on,” she said.
The bill will now make it possible to get an “Absolute Divorce” on grounds of “Cruelty” or “Excessively Vicious Conduct” toward the couple’s children. It was already grounds if the offenses were committed toward the spouse.
Dumais found the perspective of others interesting in considering something she will soon have to deal with in her professional life. “Why would we make it easier to get divorced?” she said.
