Everything was in place for the beam operation, spanning one of the gaps in a 120-foot overpass from the inner loop of the Beltway to I-95 south. A string of thunderstorms finally halted the operation on Saturday, August 16. The Virginia Department of Transportation will try again Saturday, Aug. 23 and again the weekend after Labor Day to complete the beam erection project. Each weekend, VDOT will close I-395 north, diverting traffic to Van Dorn Street, and rerouting it to the inner loop of I-495 so motorists can get back on I-395 north or continue on I-495 west.
