New Medical Education Center Opens

<bt>In August, the Northern Virginia Community College Medical Education Center begins classes, giving area students an option for college level courses in the Springfield area. Located south of Springfield mall off Loisdale Road, the campus anticipates serving 1,500 students initially, growing to 3,000 within five years.

Programs include a health academy for 11th and 12th grade high school students, NVCC associate's degree and certificate programs, George Mason University's bachelor's degree in health sciences and transition courses for nursing programs, a Virginia Commonwealth University's bachelor's program in clinical lab sciences and radiation therapy, and continuing education programs.

Fall semester classes start Aug. 25. Currently enrolled students can register now for credit classes through NOVAnet, the college's telephone registration system at 703-323-3770 and 703-330-3770 in Prince William County. In-person registration started Aug. 11 at all five campuses - Annandale, Alexandria, Loudoun, Manassas and Woodbridge. In addition, beginning this fall, Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) will be offering developmental English and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.

Developmental English courses help students prepare for college writing by teaching techniques to improve clarity and raise writing proficiency. ESL courses are designed for non-native English speakers and help students improve their oral and written language skills.
