Herndon resident Kathy Gold will be hiking the Grand Canyon, along with 11 others, in an effort to raise funds for diabetes research.
The group is taking the Grand Canyon Challenge for the nonprofit Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation, for which Gold works as a nurse and diabetes educator. They will hike approximately 7 miles down the south rim Dec. 18, camp over night then climb back up Dec. 19. Gold said the elevation change is about 1 mile from rim to the canyon floor.
"Diabetes can be overcome and we can overcome the canyon," Gold said. "I've been working out at the Y with a trainer. I hope to be able to do this and survive this. My goal is to raise $3,000 for diabetes research."
Anyone wishing to contribute to Gold's quest can send donations to: The Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation, Kathy's Hike, 1206 Potomac St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20007.
