At South Lakes

Two hundred sixty South Lakes students of all grade levels displayed 175 projects at the school's annual Science Fair on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The projects were judged by more than 100 parent volunteers and 43 projects from 10 different categories, ranging from earth and space science to zoology, received first or second place awards. (Depending on the size of the category, numerous projects tied for first or second place.) Winners have the opportunity to compete at the regional level.

Select visual arts students recently entered the annual Scholastic Arts Competition. Almost a dozen student artists received Gold Key and Silver Key awards for either individual drawing, painting, sculpture and photography pieces or for entire portfolios.

With second semester underway, senior political science students have begun their internships for local and federal government departments and offices as well as for other organizations around the Washington, D.C. area. Internship locations include Volunteer Fairfax, the Pentagon, Community and Recreation Services, the World Affairs Council, U.S. Rep. Jim Moran's Capitol Hill office, the Office of County Executives, the Reston Association, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton's Capitol Hill office, and the Library of Congress. The students intern for about three hours every other weekday afternoon.
