Erin McAvoy, 19, Dies

Erin Kathleen McAvoy, 19, of Reston, died Dec. 31, in a single car accident in Elkins, W.Va. She was a sophomore at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va.

A communications major at Davis & Elkins, McAvoy was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and last summer participated in the college’s summer study abroad program in Spain.

A recognized swimmer, McAvoy also coached for the Reston Swim Team Association.

She graduated from Massa-nutten Military Academy in Woodstock, on May 27, 2000. She was a recipient of the Senior McCauley Award, given to the senior who has “exhibited high moral character and has excelled academically and athletically.” McAvoy lettered in equestrian and swimming and was named “Most Outstanding Female Swimmer” three times. She served as the academy swim team captain and was named to the All-Delaney Athletic Conference first team for swimming. McAvoy was twice awarded the Army Reserve top scholar athlete’s award. She finished as the highest-ranking female cadet, Battalion Executive Officer, at Massanutten.

McAvoy was born on Feb. 10, 1983 in Arlington. Survivors include her parents, Dereck and Julie McAvoy of Reston; and a brother, Kyle McAvoy of Reston.

Services were held on Jan. 5 at the Adams Green Funeral Home in Herndon. A memorial service will be held on the campus of Davis & Elkins College on Jan. 17, at 3 p.m. The family has established the Erin McAvoy Memorial Fund at Davis & Elkins in her memory.
