The Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and election mixer took place on May 21. Members voted and elected new officers and the entire slate of the board of directors and advisers.

Ariel Research, a subsidiary of Eastman Chemical Co., has leased 23,000 square feet of space at 8280 Greensboro Drive in Tysons Corner. Tom Birnbach, Rich Rhodes and Justin Vitarello of CRSNA Partners/Washington provided exclusive tenant advisory services to the company for its expansion and relocation from Bethesda, Md.
PRA International, a contract research organization, has had continued success speeding up the process of conducting clinical trials for its clients. Companies are meeting their goal of obtaining faster drug approval. Although PRA's strength thus far has been in the United States, its international offices are becoming key components to its continued growth and success. In Poland, PRA has been able to recruit patients for oncology trials four to seven times faster than in the United States or Western Europe, and almost 60 percent of trials are conducted in compliance with FDA regulations.

Womble Carlyle Sandridge and Rice, PLLC, was recently awarded the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund 2003 Corporate Leadership Award. The award is the highest honor presented by the fund to recognize businesses and business leaders that have demonstrated commitment to the fund, its 45 member institutions and the students educated at those schools. Bryan F. Casey, senior account executive for McLean Insurance/Academy Commercial Insurance Agency Inc., received the "Young Agent of the Year" award from the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia (IIAV). Casey received the award during IIAV's 105th annual convention, which took place June 11-14 in Virginia Beach.
Langley Residential Support Services (LRSS) is celebrating both its 20th anniversary and being chosen by the Points of Light Foundation as No. 2426 for May 23. LRSS is featured on the Web site www.PointsofLight.org. This award, instituted by former President George Bush, recognizes and calls public attention to LRSS' contributions toward the problems surrounding the care of adults with mental retardation. LRSS received congratulatory letters from President George W. Bush, former President Bush and Robert Goodwin, president and CEO of the foundation.
The Financial Planning Association National Capital Chapter recently raised $16,000 for the Good Samaritan Foundation at a black-tie gala. Former Washington Redskins Art Monk and Charles Mann addressed the members and guests, a gathering of more than 200 people. At the gala, the FPA also presented the following awards: Stephen Quinn Cassaday, FPA Leadership Award; Albert Crenshaw of The Washington Post, Financial Journalist of the Year Award; David Dondero, Lifetime Achievement Award; Dennis Gurtz, Financial Planner of the Year Award.
Hair Cuttery is celebrating its Fifth Annual Share-A-Haircut campaign to help underprivileged children all around the country. The program provides children served by local social service agencies with a new haircut for the start of the new school year. For every haircut purchased for children up to age 18 at any Hair Cuttery salon between Aug. 1 and 15, Hair Cuttery will donate a free haircut to children from partner social service agencies in Washington, D.C. Some 8,000 complimentary back-to-school haircuts will be donated to the children served by Neediest Kids.
Toastmasters International District 27 invites area businesses, service organizations, churches, schools and government agencies to take advantage of its Speakers Bureau, a free public service that helps to take the risk out of hiring a speaker. Speakers can present speeches on topics including motivational and inspirational topics, self-esteem, government issues, women’s issues, technology, marketing, real estate and international relations. With enough notice, some members can also give a custom presentation.
The initial contact through the Bureau is free. If the organization decides to call the speaker back after the speaker has performed at its function, it then coordinates call-backs with the speaker directly. Linens 'n Things has secured a lease a 55,000 square foot site at the intersection of Route 7 and Route 123 from JGBR Rosenfeld Retail, a shopping-center leasing, management and development company located in Bethesda. Buildout of the new Linens 'n’ Things location will take approximately six months. The grand opening is currently slated for the fall.
PRA International Inc., a global clinical research organization, has promoted Sebastian Pacios to the position of vice president of operations, countries group. He will relocate from Spain to the company's McLean headquarters. The countries group will now include European clinical monitoring operations. Pacios will also manage PRA's international partners relations.
Charles B. Gibson Jr. of Bankers Insurance in Fairfax was installed to the board of directors of the Virginia Financial Services Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia (IIAV) for the 2003-04 fiscal year. Gibson has served on the board of the IIAV and on many of the committees throughout his career.
Charles F. Bullington of McLean/Academy Commercial Insurance of McLean was installed as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia for the 2003-04 fiscal year. Bullington began his career in insurance in 1966 in life sales, then moved to property and casualty in 1970 with INA/CIGNA. He became an agent in 1980 and joined the McLean Agency in 1988.
River Bend Golf and Country Club president Jim Rafferty and the board of directors have announced the appointment and contract ratification of Allan R. Irwin as general manager of the club. In his new position Irwin becomes the chief operating officer of the club and will be responsible for the overall financial and operational performance of the club and the implementation of the policies and procedures established by the board of directors.
