<sh>Galligan Wins Senate Primary

<bt>Alexandria's Greg Galligan will face Clifton's Jay O'Brien in November's 39th District state Senate race. O'Brien is the Republican incumbent, and Galligan became the Democratic candidate last Saturday, in a firehouse primary at the Lee District Government Center.

Galligan garnered more than 80 percent of the votes against fellow Democrat Rick Gonzalez, to rack up a 204-47 victory. Galligan received the bulk of the votes in Fairfax County, while a majority of Prince William County voters chose Gonzalez. In his upcoming campaign, Galligan plans to focus on education, health care and property-tax relief.

<sh>Springfield Pianist Dies

<bt>Madeleine Farago, a resident of Springfield for the past 50 years, died on May 31. She was widely known in the area for teaching generations of young people the love of music and piano playing. Madeleine was vice president of Springfield Music Center for 47 years. Some of her former students are actively involved in music as teachers and professional performers.

Farago studied music first in Budapest, her native city, continuing at Accademia di Santa Cecilia, where she obtained her master’s degree in music education.

Farago is survived by her husband, Ernesto Farago; daughter Susan Hackett; and brothers-in-law Marcel and Frank Farago.

<sh>Graffiti Incident at Lake Braddock

<bt>Fairfax County Police are investigating a graffiti incident at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke. The incident occurred on Tuesday, between 2 and 3 a.m. An officer on patrol found that several areas of the school building had been spray-painted with profanity and swastikas. The officer observed no other destruction of property. A sweep of the area for suspects yielded no results.

<sh>5K Run/Walk

<bt>The fourth annual Tim Harmon 5K run/walk takes place Saturday, June 21, at 8:30 a.m., at the Fairfax County Government Center. Registration is $17 by June 6 and $20 afterward. Register on race day from 7-8:15 a.m. or at www.racepacket.com. This certified event has three divisions: runners/walkers, Fairfax County employees and baby joggers. Prizes will be awarded.
