The Women's Ministry of First Baptist Church of Merrifield, located at 5122 Ransell Road, Falls Church, will sponsor the second annual Fish Fry and Gospel Sing on Friday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to this free event featuring a meal and gospel singing by male choruses. On Sunday, May 11, Minister Jackie Timmons of 5th Street Baptist Church in Richmond will lead the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mother's Day worship services.

The Burke Community Church is hosting a yard sale on Saturday, May 10, from 7 a.m.-1 p.m., rain or shine. Re-circulation Day with New World Unity Church. On Saturday, May 31, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., at the Moose Lodge, 9612 Fernedge Lane, Lorton, the New World Unity Church will address the distribution problem that keeps abundance from reaching all people equally with a "free garage sale." Furniture, kitchen implements, games, clothing, books, lamps and an array of miscellaneous items that have been given freely will be exchanged for good will only, no money. To donate, call Rev. The Rev. Hubert Stanley Beckwith, founding minister and pastor emeritus of the Little River United Church of Christ, Annandale, was among those honored by Howard University on April 25 at its second annual James F. Jenkins Pillar of Faith Awards ceremony. Beckwith was recognized for his role in establishing a congregation committed to the full integration of society and for his role as a founder and first president of the Fairfax County Council on Human Relations.

In January 1955, Beckwith was the founding pastor of the Congregational Christian Church of Fairfax County, which later became the Little River United Church of Christ. The church was open to all races and worked against the then-current official racial restrictions of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Beckwith and the Church were leaders in the formation of the Fairfax County Council on Human Relations, with Beckwith serving as its first president. He continued as pastor of the Little River United Church of Christ until his retirement in February 1987. He also served as second president of the Virginia Council on Human Relations. He was a Moderator of the Middle Atlantic Conference of Congregational Christian Churches and a Chair of the Potomac Association Church and Ministry Committee, Central Atlantic Conference, United Church of Christ.

Lord of Life Lutheran Church offers three weeks of summer camps in July for elementary school age girls and boys at the church's Fairfax location at 5114 Twinbrook Road. The first is an arts and crafts camp from July 14-18, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Rising kindergartners to second graders will have crafts and games; rising third to sixth graders will have art classes with a talented artist.

From July 21-25, a music and theater arts camp will be offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This camp is open to rising first and fourth graders and returning older students who attended last year's camp and want to help this year. From July 28-Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., a sports and games camp for rising first to third graders and rising fourth to sixth graders will be offered. The two camps will run during the same time with appropriate activities for each age group.

All camps will be $40 per child for each camp with a maximum of $80 per family for each camp (two children or more.) For more information, contact the Lord of Life Church office at 703-323-9500. T.O.T. preschool, a ministry of Sydenstricker United Methodist Church, 8508 Hooes Road, Springfield, will begin its 16th year of operation in September. Vienna Baptist Church will be jamming every Sunday at 6 p.m. with a new service, VBPraise, an energetic, contemporary approach to worship. The Women's Ministry at Jubilee Christian Center is starting a new Bible study, discussing the book "Breaking Free," by Beth Moore. Classes are either Mondays, at 7:30 p.m., or Tuesdays, at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $20, including the book. Child care is available for the Tuesday morning classes. United Community Ministries is calling for donations of food, homeless care package items, baby items, personal care items, bags and other various needs.
