American Legion Post 177, located at 3939 Oak St., in Fairfax, is distributing Blue Star Banners to relatives of service members. The Blue Star Banner was originally designed and patented in 1917 by WWI Army Capt. Robert L. Ouessner of the Fifth Ohio Infantry. Marine Corps Pfc. Jennifer L. Dezk, daughter of Chong H. Dezk of Fairfax, recently was promoted to her current rank while serving with Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base, in Quantico. Dezk was promoted based on sustained superior job performance and proficiency in her designated specialty. Dezk is a 2001 graduate of Fairfax High School and joined the Marine Corps in February 2002.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Mark A. Walter, son of Kathy and A. Bruce Walter of Burke, recently graduated from the Basic Enlisted Submarine Course at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Conn. Walter is a 1996 graduate of Paul VI High School of Fairfax.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Duncan T. Dysart has graduated from Airman Leadership School at Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, Va. Dysart is an aerospace ground equipment journeyman assigned to the 1st Equipment Maintenance Squadron. He has four years of military service. He is the son of Maureen L. and stepson of Michael R. Stephens of Oakdale Crescent Court, Fairfax. The staff sergeant is a 1998 graduate of Chantilly High School.

Army Pvt. Cristhian E. Tapia has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Tapia's parents are Julio and Miriam Tapia of English Wood Lane, Fairfax. In 2000, Tapia graduated from Jeb Stuart High School in Falls Church.

Army Reserve Pvt. Elisabeth D. Keene has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Keene is the daughter of Diana Keene of Village Drive, Fairfax. She is a 2001 graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School.

Navy Seaman Eric J. Thomes, son of Francisca Munoz of Fairfax, recently graduated from Operations Specialist School. Thomes joined the Navy in September 2001.

Navy Seaman Paul F. Dunne, son of Lucy and Charles X. Dunne of Annandale, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Dunne is a 1999 graduate of W.T Woodson High School.
