Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax will hold its graduation ceremony for the 289 students in the Class of 2003 Sunday, June 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the George Mason University Patriot Center.
The Baccalaureate Mass will be celebrated Friday, June 6 at St. Timothy Church in Chantilly at 7:30 p.m.
Catholic University of America president, Vincentian Father David M. O’Connell, C.M. will be the commencement speaker.
Student speakers will be valedictorian Jessica Kennedy of Fairfax and salutatorian Carolyn Greene of Aldie.
Elizabeth Anne Richardson of Centreville graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Wake Forest University on May 19. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg addressed the 1,478 students receiving undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees.
The winners of the Annual Student Poster Contest "Metro 2020: Vision of the Future Metrobus and Metrorail" were announced at a reception on May 16. Prizes were awarded in the District, Maryland, and Virginia in each level, primary (grades K-3), elementary (grades 4-6), junior high (grades 7-9) and senior high (grades 10-12) with one winning entry named poster of the year. The poster of the year will be showcased on Metrobuses, in Metrorail stations and on the Metro Web site. Jessica Y. Lee from Sidney Lanier Middle School and Young's Art Studio in Centreville was awarded poster of the year and third place in the junior high level. In the primary level, Yoonah H. Kim from Union Mill Elementary School and Young's Art Studio in Clifton was awarded second place and Ayoung Noh Lee from Centreville High School tied for second place in the Senior High level.
A children's play, "The Hobbit," by J.R. Tolkien, will be performed Friday-Sunday, May 30-June 1, by Chantilly High drama students. Show times are May 30 at 7 p.m., May 31 at 2 and 7 p.m., and June 1 at 2 p.m. in the school theater. Tickets are $4 at the door. Directed by Shannon Spicer, some 80 cast and crew members are participating.
The Westfield Pyramid Art Show will be held Wednesday, June 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Westfield gymnasium. Each year, art teachers from Cub Run, Floris, London Town, Deer Park, Virginia Run, Stone Middle, and Westfield High exchange 10 pieces of artwork for Youth Art Month. The artwork is displayed at the schools for the month of March and then return to Westfield High for the Pyramid Art Show. The purpose of the show is to provide an opportunity for art students to display their work in a professional quality art show. The high school students submit entries for one-person, two-person, or general shows. Artwork includes media such as photography, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, and computer graphics. All students who are included receive a personal invitation for the show, but it is open to the public. There will be a silent Art Auction to benefit an Art Department and a scholarship for a graduating art student.
All Westfield High School parents of the Class of 2004 are invited to attend an information meeting on next year's All-Night Graduation Party (ANGP). The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Hall at WHS. The first general meeting of the new Colin L. Powell Elementary School PTA will be held Tuesday, June 10 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Rocky Run Middle School. Stone Middle School's Theatre Arts Club — a.k.a. Stone Players — present their adaptation of John Wilson's "Be Smart, Don't Start!" The show features acting, singing, dancing and more! This is an updated multi-media version which delivers its crucial message with the added help of contemporary dance and pop music like "Best Years of Our Lives" and "Soak up the Sun". The show opens with a short video introduction by Congressman Bill Young, addressing the Stone and Centreville community, and closes with a rousing rap written just for Stone Middle School. A Summer Band and Orchestra Camp will be held June 30-July 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Franklin Middle School. Cost is $140/student or $150 after June 6. The Children's Friendship Project for Northern Ireland is seeking local families to help with the peace and reconciliation effort in Northern Ireland. Consider hosting a pair of Protestant and Roman Catholic teens (boys or girls ages 15 to 18) in your home for four weeks this summer. To be eligible, families must provide a safe-neutral setting for the teens to get to know one another, a single bedroom for them to share, and day-long adult supervision. World Heritage is seeking local host families for high school boys and girls from Spain, France, Germany, Thailand, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico or Brazil through World Heritage International Student Exchange Program. Centreville Elementary is expanding its after-school, homework/activities club for grades three through six. It'll go from one to two evenings a week, from 3:45 to 5 or 5:30 p.m. The school provides a snack and transportation home, plus homework help and various leisure activities. Some 140 children are expected to participate, but community volunteers are needed to help staff it; call Principal Jim Latt at 703- 502-3500.
Fairfax County Public Schools will offer 14 high school courses online through its Online Campus for summer school 2003. The Online Campus offers regular education courses that are as challenging as in-class courses, with mandatory daily attendance, midterm and final exams, and Standards of Learning (SOL) testing. The classes are offered at no charge to FCPS students, but require the approval of the high school guidance counselor.
While it is not intended to replace the face-to-face classroom, the FCPS Online Campus offers choices for students who: are homebound or home schooled, need a class or two to graduate on time, need to catch up, or need to work but want to complete the requirements for a high school diploma.
