Responsibility? Accountability?

Letter to the Editor

<bt>To the Editor:

I would like to comment on Mr. Sickles proposal to, in my words, have the state of Virginia subsidize Fairfax County. ("Sickles Targets Growth.")

When is someone from Fairfax County going to stand up and take responsibility for the out-of-control spending and the mismanagement of our Board of Supervisors? I do not agree with Mr. Sickles' proposal to take more money away from the state in order to subsidize Fairfax County. The county, like the rest of us, needs to tighten its belt and live within its means. I don't have another pot to pull money out of when times get tough. I have to budget properly and make tough choices and be accountable to my family.

Mr. Sickles states "instead of taking a sizable chunk from the state budget, he'll start with 1 percent and increase at equal increments so the state budget can make adjustments." Adjustments? Shouldn't that be what Fairfax County should do? Does Mr. Sickles propose an increase in income taxes to make up for the loss of revenue to the state? Would only Fairfax County be able to get back a portion of its income taxes? What about the other counties? How will a proposal from a rookie delegate to bleed off state funds be received by the statewide delegates? Sounds like Mr. Sickles should be running for Fairfax County supervisor rather than statewide office.
