A New Home

Dear New Fairfax City Residents,

Welcome Home!

As a new resident, you made a wise choice picking Fairfax City. You'll enjoy the many delights available to you in one of Metropolitan Washington's best-kept secrets.

Five reasons led my family to pick Fairfax City when we moved here four years ago. We have attractive and active neighborhoods, wonderful schools, a responsive government, plus a wide array of attractions and events all within 15 miles of the White House.

Our Fairfax City neighborhoods provide a high quality of life. With 40 civic associations, including Country Club Hills where I live, there are lots of local events. Our association greets new residents and we sponsor many social events, including an annual picnic.

Country Club Hills is a great example of an active community. Our local leaders such as Hildie Carnie, Armistice Tutora, Patrice Winter, Olivier Long, Jill Toth, Lisa Whetzel, David Abate, Steve and Debbie Lane, Sharon Leasure, Ingrid Annibale, and Katie Baxter-Gagen, their families, plus many others contribute several hours each month turning our neighborhood into a place where everyone feels welcome.

On July 19, our community spent a day in the heat and humidity with our mayor, Rob Lederer, clearing an empty lot we use for our annual picnics.

Even our state delegate, Chap Petersen, dropped by with water, coffee, doughnuts and a helping hand.

Our schools in Fairfax City are top-rated and run by our local city school board. Our students, teachers, administrators and school board are the best: Fairfax High School was ranked #86 in our Nation by Newsweek magazine.

Our government is efficient and responsive. For a home assessed at $300,000, our tax is about $500 lower per year than Fairfax County. We have a library, a huge park and many community parks. You can even call our mayor, city council, or our city staff, and they'll call you right back.

Our community events are spectacular. Our 4th of July Parade is attended by thousands. There are floats, bands, and night-time fireworks. American Legion Post 177 earned First Prize for their float honoring veterans.

We also have a Chocolate Lover's Festival that brings an extra special flavor to our town. Thousands more visit our historic homes, fine shops and outstanding restaurants.

And Fairfax City rests at the doorstep of the District of Columbia, with so many tremendous historical, sightseeing, and other educational attractions that many of your friends will come visit you just to see our nation's capital.

So welcome to Fairfax City. Please visit John Harold, our city's general registrar, at the Sisson House next to City Hall, and register to vote. Our democracy and your liberty depend upon our mutual responsibility to participate.

And while you're at City Hall, walk around downtown and see all the wonderful small town amenities Fairfax City offers. Then put down some roots and relax. Get involved, and you'll get to know your neighbors and help make your new community a little better for everyone. Our family enjoys living here, and we're sure you will, too!
