Who's Who in the City of Fairfax

Mayor Robert Lederer is serving his first term as mayor of Fairfax. Lederer is the executive vice president of an International Trade Association located in the Tysons Corner area. He served three terms on the City Council in the 1980s, and he served on the council from 2000-2002, before being elected to the position of mayor in 2002. Lederer lives in Fairfax with his wife, Maureen, and his three children.

Council member Joan W. Cross is serving her first term on the City Council. Cross is the marketing director for the Burdette Smith Group, P.C., a CPA firm in Fairfax. She served on the Board of Architectural Review for 10 years, and she chaired the board for three terms. Cross has a husband, Ron, and three adult sons.

Council member Jeffrey C. Greenfield is serving his fifth term on the City Council. Greenfield is a program analyst at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a small-business owner. He was a member of the 1993 Bond Referendum Task Force, the Fairfax 2020 Commission, and the city's Park and Recreation Advisory Board. Greenfield lives in Windy Hill with his wife, Lisa.

Council member Gail C. Lyon is serving her first term on the City Council. Lyon is a business owner with a master's degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has served as president of the Country Club Hills Recreation Association for three years, and she has devoted much time to the Fairfax Police Youth Club, Cub Scouts and Brownies. Lyon currently lives in Fairfax with her husband, Peter, and her three children.

Council member Gary J. Rasmussen is serving his seventh term on the City Council, having first been elected in 1990. Rasmussen retired in 1999 after working 36 years with the Federal government in Congressional and executive offices. He has served as chair of the City Planning Commission and as City Council representative to the Northern Virginia Planning District Commission and the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission. Rasmussen and his wife, Mary Jo, have four children and three grandchildren, and they currently live in Mosby Woods.

Council member R. Scott Silverthorne is serving his sixth term on the City Council. Silverthorne is the director of government relations at Capital One Financial Corporation. He is a past representative for the city to the Northern Virginia Planning District Commission and the Virginia Municipal League's Environmental Quality Committee. Silverthorne lives off of Towlston Road in Fairfax.

Council member Patrice M. Winter has been a resident of Fairfax since 1986. Winter is a practicing physical therapist with her own clinic, and she serves as spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association. She is former chair of the Commission of Women and former president of the Country Club Hills Civic Association. Winter is the mother of two children.

Chairman Janice Miller has been a member of the City of Fairfax School Board for 18 years. Miller served on the City Council from 1992-1994, and she is currently a member of Friends of Fairfax and Historic Fairfax, Inc. She served as president of the Fairfax Little League and was a founding member of Northern Virginia Project Graduation. Miller and her husband, Jan, are the parents of four adult children.

Vice Chairman Courtney Robinson was born and raised in Alexandria. Robinson has served as a member of the Providence Elementary School Parent Teachers Association, and she has served on many advisory committees to the City of Fairfax School Board and Fairfax County Public Schools. She and her husband, Michael, live in Fairfax with their five children.

Allen C. Griffith has served on the City of Fairfax School Board since 1996. Griffith recently retired from a 34-year career with the United States government, where he last worked as director of human resources, systems development with the General Services Administration. He has served on the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Fairfax City Council, the Fairfax 2020 Commission and as president of the Mosby Woods Community Association. Griffith and his wife, Sandra, have two adult daughters.

Jon Buttram, a member of the City of Fairfax School Board, has been a resident of Fairfax since 1990. Buttram is an engineering consultant for a defense contractor, and he commands a Naval Reserve unit in Norfolk. He has held office with the Southeast Fairfax Citizens Association for three years, serving on the Elementary School Consolidation Task Force and two Southeast Fairfax Traffic Calming Task Forces. Buttram and his wife, Sharon, have two sons.

Penny Rood has served on the City of Fairfax School Board since 1996, serving as president from 1996-2000. Rood is employed as Code Enforcement Coordinator for Fairfax County, and she served as a Juvenile Probation Counselor for Fairfax County for 17 years. She previously served as a member of the Fairfax Falls Church Community Services Board, the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Advisory Committee and the State Board of Juvenile Justice. Rood has a husband, John Harold, and two stepsons.

State Sen. Leslie L. Byrne has been representing the 34th district since 2000. Byrne was educated at the University of Utah and Mount Vernon College. She works as a management consultant, and she served as a member of the House of Delegates from 1986-1992.

Del. J. Chapman Petersen is serving his first term representing the 37th district in the House of Delegates. Petersen attended Williams College and received a J.D. from the University of Virginia. He currently works as a lawyer, and he served on the Fairfax City Council from 1998-2001.
