Hugo Meets with President Bush

Del. Tim Hugo had the opportunity on Dec. 13 to meet with President George W. Bush to discuss efforts being made by legislators from Virginia and around the country to keep taxes low.

President Bush thanked the legislators for their work against tax increases, noting that the best way to grow our economy and create jobs is through lower taxes.  The meeting was held as part of the Americans for Tax Reform’s State Legislative Advisory Project Appreciation Event.

“The President believes, as I do, that keeping the tax burden low on families in Virginia and across the nation is the best way to continue growing our economy,” said Del. Hugo.

The daylong event, hosted by Americans for Tax Reform, included a breakfast discussion of tax reform initiatives which included a presentation by Del. Hugo on the recently completed legislative study on the Streamline Sales and Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA).  The Committee, chaired by Del. Hugo, voted overwhelmingly (8-1) to recommend that Virginia’s General Assembly should not consider adoption of SSUTA in its 2004-2005 legislative session.

“I am hopeful that the other states looking at the SSUTA issue will follow the recommendations of this study committee,” said Del. Hugo.  “Following the recommendations of the committee will preserve hundreds of small businesses and thousands of jobs in Virginia and throughout the country.”

The event also included conversations with Karl Rove, advisor to the President, and other White House officials.  Del. Hugo was one of seven Virginia legislators attending the event.
