Teens Birthday Remembered At Roadside

Candlelight dotted the roadside on Lee Chapel Road on Wednesday, Feb. 18. The flickering tribute commemorated what would have been Ashley Thompson's 17th birthday. "We were trying to make this a celebration of Ashley. She loved life," said Robin Thompson, the mother of the teen, who died in June 2003 in a car accident at the same spot on Lee Chapel Road. Family and friends gathered at the graveside earlier in the day, releasing 16 blue balloons and one white balloon. After that, they ate Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Ashley's favorite snack, according to her mother.
