Moving Two to Hunters Woods?

Only two current elementary school students would be affected by moving Sweetbay Lane and Catalpa Court out of the Terraset Elementary School district and into Hunters Woods' area, said Gary Chevalier, director of Facilities Planning Services, at the School Board's meeting last Thursday, Jan. 22.

But the change would align the elementary school boundary line with Glade Drive for transportation purposes.

Sweetbay Lane and Catalpa Court, which are located on the southwest corner of Glade Drive and Soapstone Road, are the only two streets south of Glade Drive that are currently served by Terraset Elementary School.

Capacity of Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences is 830 although 951 students are currently enrolled, according to statistics in the school's Capital Improvement Program for Fiscal Years 2005-2009. Enrollment is projected to increase to 958 in 2004, before dropping to 951 in 2005 and 895 in 2006.

The capacity of Terraset Elementary School, which was built in 1976 as a partnership between Fairfax County Public Schools and the Saudi Arabian government, is 541 while current enrollment is 577. Projected enrollment is expected to increase to 566 in 2004 and to 578 in 2006. The building structure exists underground as an energy conservation measure, according to the school profile on www.fcps.edu.

Both schools feed into Langston Hughes Middle School.
