Health Officials Seek Biting Dog

Arlington County health officials are searching for the owner of a tan-and-brown, German shepherd mix that bit a man on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 8:30 p.m. near the corner of North 16th and North Kenilworth streets.

If county officials cannot find the dog, the man will start the series of injections to treat rabies. Animal Control needs to find the dog to confirm the status of its rabies vaccination and determine the health of the animal.

The dog was on a leash and appeared to be a young adult or older puppy. The woman walking the dog is described as approximately 30 years old, with long blond hair. She was wearing a heavy coat. A witness reported that she had difficulty controlling the dog as she approached the man.

The owner, or anyone with information about the dog or the incident, should call the Animal Welfare League of Arlington at any time at 703-931-9241, and press 1 for emergencies. (After hours and on Sunday, the above-mentioned number has an answering service and callers may leave a message.) The AWLA is also available by e-mail at mail@awla.org.

Officer in Traffic Accident

An Arlington County police officer was involved in a two-vehicle accident early Sunday morning at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and North Nelson Street.

The officer, a lieutenant serving as the shift watch commander, was hit at approximately 4:40 a.m. while traveling east on Washington in a marked Ford Expedition. The driver of the second vehicle apparently disregarded a stop sign while heading south on North Nelson Street, according to police reports. The officer was not on an emergency call and did not have the vehicle's emergency equipment activated.

The officer was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, treated and released with minor injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was also transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the second vehicle was transported by helicopter to a local hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and the names of those involved are not being released at this time pending notification of family members.
