Lottery Scam

<bt>Over the last two weeks the Herndon Police have investigated two scam cases involving the lottery. The suspects have attempted to gain money up front from Hispanic victims who are promised a share of lottery winnings. In both cases, a female suspect was described as a white female with light complexion, 45-50 years of age, 5 feet to 5 feet 5 inches tall, 150-170 pounds and speaking fluent Spanish. In the first case, a male suspect was described as white with a light complexion, 6 feet tall with a strong build, black hair and eyes, also speaking fluent Spanish. In the second case, a male suspect was described as white with a light complexion, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 150 pounds with brown hair, speaking fluent Spanish. A possible vehicle involved is an older, green, four-door unknown make. Anyone having any information regarding these subjects or other victims is asked to contact the Herndon Police Department at 703-435-6846.

<sh>False Report

<bt>The Fairfax County Police have determined a report of an alleged assault made by a 17-year-old Herndon-area girl March 1 was a false report of a crime. According to police, the girl will not be prosecuted.

The teen had reported she was assaulted by a man dressed in black and wearing a mask as she walked in the 2100 block of Monaghan Drive on her way to school.

<sh>Budget Availability

<bt>Residents of Herndon can review a copy of the fiscal year 2005 proposed budget beginning April 1 in the Human Resources Office located in Suite 110 of the Herndon Municipal Center, 777 Lynn St. In addition, all residents will receive a 12-page summary of the proposed budget in the mail beginning April 1.

<sh>Utilities Work

<bt>Beginning in early April, the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Town of Herndon will begin relocating existing telecommunication utilities in advance of the South Elden Street Road Improvement Project.

Areas of utility construction include:

* Worldgate Drive and Parcher Avenue in the vicinity of Elden Street.

* Elden Street from Worldgate Drive to the Verizon building north of the Herndon Parkway.

* Herndon Parkway east and west of Elden Street.

Construction activities requiring lane reductions will be limited to the hours between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Some night work is anticipated within certain critical areas in order to ease traffic congestion. Motorists are advised to allow additional time getting through this area. Completion is expected in November.

<sh>Gangs Informational Meeting

<bt>The Herndon Crime Prevention Council will sponsor an informational meeting on gangs Wednesday, April 7, from 7-8:30 p.m., in the Herndon Town Council Chambers, 765 Lynn St. Police Chief Toussaint Summer and Officer Claudio Saa, and John Werner, vice principal at Herndon High School, will be on hand to update residents on the efforts to educate the community about gangs, how to recognize members, and what the Gang Task Force is doing.

<sh>Candidate-Sponsored PBS Screening

<bt>Joel Mills, a candidate for Herndon Town Council, will play host to a special screening and discussion of the film, "Finding Community: The Road Toward Immigrant Participation," which is part of the PBS series, "The New Americans."

The screening is slated for Wednesday, April 7, from 7-8 p.m., at the Fortnightly Library, 768 Center St.

The focus of the film is on civic participation and integration of recent immigrants. Citizens, public officials and other candidates are invited to attend, share their ideas and learn about how communities work with this issue.
