Shots Fired at Springfield Mall

Two men get away after one fired shots at a mall security officer Friday.

Two suspects fled the scene after one took a shot at a security officer outside Springfield Mall on Friday, Nov. 12.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD), mall security officers were confronting a pair of men inside the Mall on Friday afternoon, after a verbal conflict with two other men, when two of the men took off. They exited the Mall through Entrance 2, according to Police spokeswoman Mary Mulrenan, and were pursued by mall security in a van. The security guard contacted the FCPD, and the officers continued pursuit until they caught up to the suspects behind the Mall of America on the corner of Franconia and Loisdale roads.

Officers jumped out of the vehicle and approached the suspects, when one suspect drew a handgun from the waistband of his pants, and the other drew a knife. One suspect fired two shots at one of the security officers, neither of which hit him. Both suspects then ran away and headed out of sight behind Franconia Road, according to police reports.

Police searched the area but could not locate either of the suspects. One suspect is described as white, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 140 pounds, with brown hair, and the other is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, 140 pounds with brown hair.

Springfield Mall management did not return calls requesting comment on the incident.
