The Herb Block Foundation offers at least 50 community college scholarships annually to Washington, D.C., area high school graduates pursuing either academic or vocational training. The program is designed to serve high school graduates, first year college students or those who went to work after high school and now wish to resume their studies. Applications and supporting documents must be received by Dec. 1, 2004. High School counselors and financial aid directors at schools in the area are provided with application forms and brochures. Ryan T. Newmeyer, son of Navy Cmdr. Kevin P. Newmeyer of Springfield, recently participated in the Naval Academy’s week-long summer seminar program in Annapolis, Md. This seminar was designed for upcoming students to get a feel for the challenges and benefits to a Navel Academy education.

The National Honor Roll recognizes high achieving high school and middle school students.

Vincent Cao, Dustin Johnston, Brian Lee and Michael Dempsey of Fairfax have been named to the Upper School Dean's List at Randolph-Macon Academy for the fourth quarter.

Torrey E. Smith of Fairfax recently received a scholarship from BP America. Torrey is a student at Robinson Secondary School.

Samantha Reho from Robinson Secondary School has been selected to attend Governor's School for Humanities at the University of Richmond this summer. This intensive four-week program of classes, workshops, field trips and special events is designed to encourage students’ individual growth as well as to challenge them to achieve personal excellence in their fields.

Rami Maarouf, a student at Fairfax High School, was recently selected to attend Virginia Tech’s Governor’s School for Agriculture this summer. Students will receive instruction from the university’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Natural Resources, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

Melissa Shue and Ashley Kang, students at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, were recently selected to attend Virginia Tech’s Governor’s School for Agriculture this summer. Students will receive instruction from the university’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Natural Resources, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

Monica Tubesing and Gautam Malhotra, students at Lake Braddock Secondary School, were recently selected to attend Virginia Tech’s Governor’s School for Agriculture this summer. Thomas Knight, the son of Robert and Jane Knight of Burke, graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy on May 29, 2004. Tom will attend North Carolina State University, where he was awarded a $9,500 annual scholarship. The total value of the scholarship is $38,000.
