Local Marine Killed in Iraq

A McLean man, 1st Lt. Alexander Wetherbee, was killed Sept. 12 in Iraq. He was 27 years old at the time of his death and a 1995 graduate of McLean High School. He is survived by his parents, Harry and Doris Wetherbee of McLean.

Wetherbee joined the United States Marine Corps on Dec. 22, 2001 and had received several awards for his service. He was awarded a Combat Action Ribbon, Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Service Deployment Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal.

This was his second deployment in Iraq.

According to a USMC statement, Wetherbee died Sept. 12 from injuries received due to enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Wetherbee was an Assault Amphibious Vehicle Officer assigned to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.
