Spring Cleaning

Members of Cub Scout Pack 1116 from Vienna spent last Sunday afternoon cleaning up a section of the Washington & Old Dominion Trail as part of their community service project.

Approximately 35 boys and 25 parents and grandparents responded to a request from Parks and Recreation director Cathy Salgado to clean up the area between the Vienna Community Center and Maple Street.

The afternoon began with a quick primer on the mechanics of stormwater runoff by Elizabeth Burke, environmental educator with Mud Pie Planet. Once the scouts learned how everything from milk jugs to plastic bags wind up in a creek, they headed out to clean the stream near the W&OD Trail.

Among the unusual items that the boys uncovered were a one-wheeled bike, a decaying pogo stick and a fan with its motor still attached.

All told, the scouts hauled several hundred pounds of trash from the creek and trail. In true Cub Scout spirit, they left the town looking a little better than they found it.
