Goodwin House

The University of Virginia celebrated 100 years of basketball this year. During half-time celebrations in Charlottesville at the Virginia vs. Virginia Tech game on Feb. 12, Goodwin House, Alexandria resident Bus Knight — born in 1907 — represented the first decade of basketball at UVA and was introduced down on the court. At 98, Bus is the oldest living basketball player for the University — class of 1929. Bus played basketball during his freshman year and did not letter, but did letter all four years in track.

One section of the first floor concourse at Goodwin House is designated as "Gallery Walk" and features changing exhibits of the work of local artists. Currently, the American Red Cross Community Services Program is presenting paintings done by seniors at the Ladder and Annie B. Rose Housing Complex. These artists began painting four years ago when they started attending art classes offered by local professional artists who volunteer for the Alexandria Chapter of the American Red Cross. The landscapes, portraits and still lives exhibited are high quality and full of life. On March 30, the artists visited Goodwin House to meet fellow artists among our residents, many of whom learned their skills in our art department after moving to Goodwin House. The visitors shared with us how they became involved in making art and what it has meant to them.

We are indebted to LensCrafters "Gift of Sight" Program for their monthly visits. A licensed optician spends two hours serving those who have eyeglasses that need cleaning, adjusting or repairing. As a community outreach project, there is no charge for this service.
