Citizens drop off last-minute tax returns at Merrifield Post Office.

April 15, as always, marked the deadline for Americans to file their Federal Tax returns. The Merrifield Post Office on Lee Highway remained open until midnight to accept last minute filings. Fairfax County Police blocked off one lane in each direction in the early evening and postal employees set up sorting bins on the roadside. Most filers came with postage already affixed and were able to drop off their tax returns without getting out of their cars. The postal workers sorted the mailings as they collected them, by placing them into bins marked for the end destination for both federal and state returns.
