Reston Girl Scouts Sent Cookies to American Troops

As a community service project, Brownie and Junior Girl Scout Troop 4553 of Reston sent out 375 donated boxes of Girl Scout cookies to American military personnel stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. For the project, which was part of the “Gift of Caring Program,” the girls collected cookies donated from family members, friends, and other people in the Reston community. Two weeks ago, the girls packaged the cookies in 23 large shipping boxes and mailed them out. Serving abroad, Greg Webb, brother of a runner from South Lakes High School, Alan Webb, was sent 30 boxes of cookies to distribute to the men and women in his unit. All the other boxes of cookies were sent to men and women from Virginia.

Bomb Scare at Langston Hughes

Early Tuesday morning, April 19, police received a telephone call that a bomb would go off at Langston Hughes Middle School sometime during the day. The school was evacuated while police and school security staff were deployed to secure the school, the entrance, the parking lot, and the approach drive. A police bomb-sniffing dog was also brought in to check the school. After police checked the school thoroughly, the building was cleared and students were allowed back in around 10:15 a.m. Police continue to investigate the threat.

A letter sent home with students asked parents to discuss the consequences of such threats and stated, “Police are very clear that such threats are crimes, and persons responsible for such threats are subject to criminal prosecution.”

Reston Association Offering a Season-Long Guest Pool Pass

The Reston Association is offering a new season-long guest pool pass. The new pass will allow members to bring any one guest of the family to the pool during the entire pool season. This is a significant difference in what RA was doing last season, charging each guest $5 per visit to the pool. Now, any guest can use the pass, all season long, with no limitations on pool visits, for just $20. When using the guest pass, a member of the purchasing family must accompany the guest. This pass and tennis passes can be purchased online at www.reston.org and then click on the pool and tennis icon.

The 5th Annual Pet Fiesta

In an event that is promising fur, feathers and fun, the 5th Annual Pet Fiesta is approaching. On May 7, people will come out to Reston Town Center to celebrate pets and pet lovers. The outdoor event is a benefit for gooddogz.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating potential dog owners on dog selection and care and supporting the efforts of rescue groups. Pet Fiesta also supports RestonDogs Inc., sponsor of the Off Leash Dog Area (OLDA) in Reston. The event begins at 10 a.m. with Tails on Trails, a 4K community dog walk, led by GoodDogz’s mascot, Spot. Participants are invited to pre-register at www.gooddogz.org. Following the walk, the main Pet Fiesta event will run, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Reston Town Center Pavilion and Market Street with a variety of exhibitors and non-profit organizations offering resources to pet owners.
