Katharine Smith of McLean earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Grinnell College May 23. Smith is the daughter of Christopher Smith and Juliana Geren.
Andrew Michael Friedman of McLean received an MFA in English from the University of Iowa.
McLean resident Andrew Park, a business administration major, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at the University of Vermont. To be named to the dean's list, a student must have above a 3.0 grade point average and be in the top 20 percent of his/her college or school.
Brian Newell, a 2005 graduate of Connecticut College and resident of McLean, achieved dean's high honors for the spring semester. To achieve dean's high honors, a student must earn between a 3.70 and 4.0 grade point average.
McLean resident Margaret Dierker received a juris doctor degree from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law at the school's commencement ceremony May 13.
Emily Huyler, daughter of Bill and Carol Huyler of McLean, graduated cum laude with a BS degree in marketing from Virginia Tech. Huyler, a 2001 Langley High School graduate, served as president of Mortar Board, the national senior honor and leadership society at Virginia Tech.
Barrett Belair received a Bachelor of Arts from Williams College June 5. Belair majored in economics, was on the dean's list for the fall semester in 2003 and won the scholar athlete award for 2003-2004. He participated in varsity soccer, the glee club, Mock United Nations, the percussion wind ensemble and the little sibling program. Belair is the son of Holly and Bob Belair of McLean.
Anne Kristol, daughter of Susan and Wiliam Kristol of McLean, and John McConnell, the son of Cynthia and Richard McConnell of McLean, were named to the dean's list at Washington University in St. Louis. Kristol is a graduate of the Madeira School and McConnell is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology. Both are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. To be named to the dean's list, a student must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or above and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.
Catherine R. Braun of McLean, was inducted into the Virginia Tech Chapter of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Society. Braun is a senior majoring in psychology.
Karin A. Sundquist, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Erik Sundquist of McLean, has been named to the dean's list at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn. for the spring semester. Students on the dean's list must earn a grade point average of 3.7 or higher for the semester. Sundquist, a graduate of George C. Marshall High School, is a rising senior majoring in religion.
Ricky Bates, a Langley High School graduate from McLean, was named to the dean's list for the fall and spring semesters at NYU. Bates will be a junior this fall and is a film major interning this summer in Los Angeles for Jerry Bruckheimer Productions. He is also writing a screenplay this summer. His brother, Chris Bates, also a Langley graduate, is a rising freshman at Belmont University in Nashville. He will compose the music for the screenplay his brother is writing and will be shooting during the upcoming fall semester.
Edward Mahaney-Walter, son of Mary Claire Mahaney and Herbert E. Walter of McLean, graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in May. Mahaney-Walter received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and International Relations. He is working as an analyst for Morgan Stanley in New York City.

Yaseen Abdul, daughter of Ahmad Abdul-Baki and Kathryn Abdul-Baki, was named to the Merit List of Oxford College, a two-year liberal arts division of Emory University, for the spring semester.

Shannon McCurdy, daughter of David Keith McCurdy and Pamela Mary McCurdy, and Lindsey Fay, daughter of Kevin James Fay and Nancy Ellen Fay, received a Bachelor of Arts from Emory College May 16.
Bandar El-Eita, son of Sobhi El-Eita and Mona El-Eita, will receive an Associate in Arts from Oxford College on Aug. 6.

Sean Dunaway, son of Steven Dunaway and Deborah Best, graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy May 28. He was frequently named to the President's and dean's lists, was a member of the National Honor Society and the Academy's Honor Council. He won literary magazine awards for his writings, and a member for the speech and debate teams. At the end of the school year, he was inducted into the Franklin-Grady Literary and Debating Society's Hall of Fame. This fall, he plans to attend Grinnell College, where he received a $48,000 scholarship.
Alan Gebhardtsbauer, son of Milissa Young Loiselle and Scott Gebhardtsbauer, graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy May 28. He was consistently named to the dean's and President's lists, was a member of the German National Honor Society, and was named Most Improved in Varsity Volleyball this spring. He was also presented with the Academic Achievement Award for Excellence in Acting. This fall, he plans to attend Lynchburg College, where he received a $30,000 scholarship.
Aleya Suzanne Bartis, a sophomore student at Franklin & Marshall College, was named to the Dean's List for achieving a 3.25 or better grade point average on a 4.0 scale. She is a 2003 graduate of Langley High School and the daughter of Dr. Lois and James Bartis.
Martha Spence Merrow, a sophomore art history and mathematics double major at Franklin & Marshall College, earned Honors List recognition for achieving a 3.7 or better grade point average. She is a 2003 graduate of the Potomac School, and the daughter of Joan Merrow, Oaktown, and Andrew Merrow, Arlington.
Michael Jason Lobue of McLean received a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. on Saturday, May 14.
Christina Harsanyi, daughter of Zsolt and Marianne Harsanyi of McLean, received a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism. Harsenyi is a graduate of the Madeira School, was named to the dean's list and was active in Dance Marathon and YMCA Project Soar Mentoring.
Eric Felber, the son of Melvin and Bette Felber of McLean was awarded the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine June 5. Dr. Felber earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from James Madison University in 1999. He is currently doing an internship at Crozer Hospital in Springfield, Penn.
Jacqueline F. Layson and Tina D. Navidi of McLean were named to the dean's list at Boston University for the spring semester.
Narissa E. Dalla of McLean was named to the spring term honor roll at Deerfield Academy. In order to be listed on the honor roll, a student must have an overall average of 87 or higher. Dalla is a sophomore.
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has named Timothy Lee and Robert McMains of McLean to receive scholarships for the upcoming 2005-2006 academic year. In addition to being children of Marines or former Marines, candidates must illustrate their commitment to their communities and provide a record of service to others. The goal of the foundation is to encourage these characteristics and foster this spirit in their adult lives.
