<sh>Free Adult ESL Classes

<bt>Beginning, intermediate and advanced level ESL classes will be offered from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 13 through Nov. 17. Classes will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 5114 Twinbrook Road, Fairfax. Register at the church Sept. 1 between 7 and 9 p.m. Late registration will be accepted if classes are not full. There is a $10 registration fee. The text book costs $20. Returning students do not need to buy a new book if they repeat the same level class. <sh>Free Carseat Inspections

<bt>Certified technicians from the Sully District Police Station will perform free child safety carseat inspections on Thursday, Sept. 1 from 5-9 p.m. at the station, 4900 Stonecroft Blvd., Chantilly. They will make sure the seats are correct for the child’s age and height, the child is securely placed in the seat and the seat is properly installed in the vehicle.

No appointment is necessary. Residents should install the child safety seats themselves so the technicians may properly inspect and make adjustments as necessary. Call the Sully District Child Seat Information line, 703-814-7000, ext. 5140, to confirm dates and times. For additional child seat inspection times throughout Fairfax County, call the Fairfax County Operations Support Bureau at 703-280-0559.

<bt>For the first time, Centreville Day, Saturday, Sept. 17, will feature a "Taste of Centreville" contest. <sh>Blood Donations Sought

<bt>The Inova Blood Donor Center in the Centremed I Building on Route 29 in Centreville (across from the Centreville Multiplex Cinemas) is in urgent need of blood donations, especially O positive or negative, as well as A and B. <sh>Docents Needed at Air and Space Museum

<bt>The National Air and Space Museum is recruiting the next class of docents for its Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center — the most visited museum site in Virginia.

Docents bring the museum's unparalleled collection to life through tours that share the fascinating histories of the artifacts and the people who flew them. Docent positions are unpaid but offer unlimited satisfaction for those who enjoy working with visitors and are inspired by aviation and space exploration.

Docent candidates must agree to a two-year commitment to the program and complete 11 weeks of training. They are given scheduled shifts with a minimum of eight hours per month.

Training classes will be held on Saturdays beginning Sept. 10.

Applications are available on the museum's Web site at www.nasm.si.edu/getinvolved/volunteer, or can be obtained by contacting Udvar-Hazy Center docent coordinator Valerie Clark at 703- 572-4070 or clarkva@si.edu.

Completed applications must be received by Thursday, Aug. 25.

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is located in Chantilly, off of Route 28. It is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (closed Dec. 25). Admission to the Udvar-Hazy Center is free but there is a $12 fee for public parking. The museum operated a shuttle bus between the center and its flagship building on the National Mall in Washington from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a round-trip ticket costing $12. Group discounts are available.
