<lst>The exhibition, "The Journey Begins: Visions of a Young Artist," will run from now-April 2 at the Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe St. 6-8 p.m. The exhibit features the selected works of Warren L. Harris with a variety of still life images, sculptures, portraits and scenes of Alexandria.

“Bowls! Bowls! Bowls!”, a winter show and pottery sale, will be held at the Scope Gallery at Torpedo Factory Art Center, Gallery 19, 105 N. Union St., from Feb. 5 through March 6. The works of 23 artists from the Springfield Art Guild will be exhibited from Jan. 12 -March 11 at River Farm, the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society, 7931 East Boulevard Drive. The exhibit features 34 works of art selected from more than 50 entered in a juried show judged by Rachel Collins, who is a member of the Torpedo Factory Artists Association and works in her studio in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria. River Farm is open to the public Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding Federal holidays). Admission to the exhibit and the grounds is free. Gallery G, located at 215 King St. in Old Town Alexandria, is extending its show, “A Little Humor & A Lot of History: Cave Paintings and Welded Steel Trees,” to Jan. 31. The show features the famous works of Ira Bloom and D.D. Brumbaugh, and presents welded steel replicas of historic trees and interpretations of 25,000-year-old cave paintings discovered in France and Spain. “Between the Lines.” Children interpret literature at the Athenaeum, 201 Prince St. through Feb. 27. Organized by the Northern Virginia Arts Association (NVFAA), the show features approximately 100 works created by third-grade students from nine public and private schools. The Athenaeum and the NVFAA are hosting this exhibit to introduce children and their families to the gallery and its range of cultural offerings. Gallery West, 205 South Union St., will host its 8th Annual National Juried Show from Thursday, Feb. 3- Sunday, Feb. 27. House of Cards Show, Feb. 4-27, at Del Ray Artisan Gallery, Nicholas A. Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Ave., featuring handmade cards with all the elements of imagination available. Card-making artists will use many techniques including stamping, collaging, decoupaging, painting, sewing, drawing as well as mixed media and 3-D elements. Cards will be available for purchase.

The Von Brahler Gallery, located at 1437 Powhatan St., will be hosting open studio shows during 2005 on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Shows will be on Feb. 19 and 20; March 19 and 20; April 16 and 17; May 21 and 22; June 18 and 19; July 16 and 17; Aug. 20 and 21; Sept. 17 and 18; Oct. 15 and 16; Nov. 19 and 20; and Dec. 17 and 18.

“Beauty Heals.” Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is asking local artists to submit original works for a new “Beauty Heals” collection of artwork. The permanent collection will be on display to enhance the healing environment by filling the hospital with works of color and inspiration for patients, families and staff. Entrants may submit up to three one-of-a-kind works created with the intent to heal. The artist must reside in the Washington, D.C.-metro area, and be over the age of 18.
