RA Honors Two SL Seniors

Jenn Blackwell, president of RA, on behalf of the board, presented Distinguished Service Awards to Grace Shin and Benjamin Porter, seniors at South Lakes High School last Thursday. The two students participated in the association’s Political Science Internship program and were awarded for their volunteer work and dedicated service during the internship.

Pedestrian Safety Campaign in Reston

The Reston District Police Station is having a pedestrian safety campaign between May 22 and Sept. 10, in response to a request made by Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) to maintain and enhance the safety conditions for pedestrians and cyclists in the Reston area. The enhanced enforcement will be directed at locations which have been identified by constituents as problem areas. Police will enforce both state and local traffic laws with the goal of gaining voluntary compliance from the community. Drivers will be ticketed for failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks, stopping in and blocking pedestrian crosswalks and for violating any other applicable laws. Officers will conduct the campaign along the W&OD Trail and the intersections of Wiehle Avenue, Sunset Hills Road and Sunrise Valley Drive. They will also concentrate efforts on Sunset Hills Road between Isaac Newton Square Drive West and Wiehle Avenue.

South Lake Graduation Speakers

South Lakes High School’s graduation, which will be held June 21, will feature a faculty speaker, a student speaker and a commencement speaker. Following past practice, the students elected their student speaker and faculty member. The student speaker will be Denell Davis, the current class secretary, and the faculty speaker will be James Petrik, an English teacher who recently spearheaded the tsunami relief effort at South Lakes. The graduation committee selected Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) to be the school’s commencement speaker.
