Author Discussion. David S. Reynolds author of "John Brown, Abolitionist: The Man Who Killed Slavery, Sparked the Civil War, and Seeded Civil Rights." Reynolds, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist for his book, "Walt Whitman’s America," discusses and signs his biography of the controversial Abolitionist who used terrorist tactics against slavery. 7:30 p.m., Borders at Tysons Corner, 8027 Leesburg Pike. Jazz Concert. The South Lakes High School Jazz Hawks will present its 7th Annual Live Jazz Concert & Dessert Extravaganza, at 7:30 p.m., at the Reston Community Center. The jazz band captured first place during this year's spring trip and band competition in Chicago. The event is open to the community and features jazz standards and fabulous desserts from Reston area restaurants, bake shops and hotels. The Women’s Association of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Great Falls will hold its 2005 Fashion Show and Luncheon, from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Riverbend Country Club. The scholarship honors the life and memory of Alexander DiFilipis. Scholarship applications are available in the St. Catherine of Siena Parish office at 1020 Springvale Road, Great Falls. Bicycle Safety Rodeo. Reston Association, State Farm Insurance, Fairfax County Police Bike Team and the Reston Bike Club are hosting the 10th Annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo for children ages 5-12 years. Event runs, from 1–4 p.m., but the course only takes 20 minutes to complete. Held at Lake Newport Pool parking lot, 11601 Lake Newport Road. Balalaika Concert. The Washington Balalaika Society (WBS) orchestra will present its spring concert series, at 7:30 p.m., at the Ernst Cultural Center, 8333 Little River Turnpike, in Annandale. Artistic director and conductor, Svetlana Nikonova, will present a program of Russian folk and classical — Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Vivaldi — music featuring several members of the orchestra as soloists. Walk for Life. Preparations are underway for the 22nd annual Walk for Life at three locations in Northern Virginia. Sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington (CCDA), the walk will raise funds for adoption services, foster care and crisis pregnancy counseling. CCDA serves seven cities and 21 counties in Northern Virginia. Walks will take place at Fort Hunt Park (Area A) in Alexandria, Paul VI High School in Fairfax and Broad Run High School in Ashburn. Historical Presentation. The May presentation of Cavaliers, Courage and Coffee: The Night Belonged to Mosby will be presented at 8 p.m., by lantern light and Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m., in the afternoon in the village of Atoka, four miles west of Middleburg on Route 50. The presentation features a series of short vignettes that present the life of John Singleton Mosby. Admission is free to the public.

Chamber Singers. Voce Chamber Singers, in celebration of the close of its 15th season, presents a concert of choral favorites recommended by its audience and singers. "Now That's A Good Tune!" will be presented 8 p.m., at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 543 Beulah Road, N.E., Vienna. Advance purchase tickets $18 for adults, $13 for seniors and $5 for students. Open Meeting. Project Hope & Harmony will hold an open meeting to discuss plans for establishing a formal day-labor site in the Town of Herndon. The meeting will be from 7:30-9 p.m., at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon, at 651 Dranesville Road, Herndon, across from Herndon Elementary School. Members of Project Hope & Harmony will update interested individuals and organizations about its plans and seek input into site operations and management issues at a controlled site in a more appropriate location.

Health Seminar. The Reston Chapter of The Links Inc., in partnership with Pfizer Inc., Inova Health Source, American Heart Association and the U.S. Department of Women’s Health, will feature a panel discussion on women’s health, from 2-5 p.m., at Fairfax Inova Physician’s Conference Center, 3300 Gallows Road, Falls Church, Virginia Center. Golf Tournament. Food for Others 2nd Annual Golf Tournament takes place at Herndon Centennial Golf Course. Four Person, Captain’s Choice with a 1 p.m. shotgun start; registration opens at noon. "The Searchers" (1956). One of the greatest Westerns ever made. John Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran who searches the West for his niece who was captured by the Indians. In the course of the film, it becomes difficult to determine whether he intends to rescue her or kill her. Directed by John Ford, co-starring Jeffery Hunter and featuring an 18-year-old Natalie Wood. This film series is intended for people age 55 and older. Photography. The Reston Photographic Society will host a meeting in the Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods, at 7 p.m. The featured speaker will be Elliot Stern of ACE Photo in Sterling, whose subject will be methods and procedures for precise control of digital photographic printing. George Ferenell from Monaco Photographic Systems will be on hand to demonstrate the complete Monaco Calibration System via LCD projection. The Hunters Woods Community Center is located to the rear of the shopping center at 2310 Colts Neck Road, one block east of Reston Parkway, between Sunrise Valley Drive and Glade Drive.

Multi-town Meeting. Assistance League of Northern Virginia will hold a multi-town membership meeting, from 10:15 a.m.-noon, at the Chantilly Regional Public Library, 4000 Stringfellow Road in Chantilly. Visitors are invited to participate in an Operation Hugs workshop after the meeting to learn more about Operation Hugs, which supports the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program and the OB/GYN Clinic at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The Operation Hugs workshop will be held at McLearen Self Storage, 13800 McLearen Road in Herndon after a brown-bag lunch.

Homes Tour. Annual fund-raiser sponsored by the Clifton Community Woman's Club benefits local scholarships and charities. Homes Tour is from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 day of the tour. There will also be a boutique and silent auction at the Town Hall in Clifton, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Play Auditions. Auditions for the Reston Community Players’ production of Disney’s "Beauty and the Beast" will be held May 19, 20 and 21. All roles are open. Bike to Work. Area commuters are invited to celebrate Reston's Bike to Work Day, 6:30-9 a.m., at the Reston Town Center Pavilion. The Reston Town Center rally will feature refreshments, information tables and raffle prizes for registered riders. Hunter Mill District Supervisor Cathy Hudgins and other dignitaries will be on hand for a brief welcome at 8 a.m. The organization with the most participants who check in at the Bike to Work Day rally will receive a free catered lunch for all riders compliments of Reston Whole Foods Market at a mutually agreed upon date. Opera Festival. New Dominion Chorale will present "Opera Fest," featuring Metropolitan Opera National Council Mid-Atlantic audition finalists, at 4 p.m., at the Rachel M.
