Takako Shigehisa, a Japanese instructor at the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), has been selected as one of the 2005 Faculty of the Year by Northern Virginia Community College’s Alumni Federation. Faculty of the Year honorees are selected based on their outstanding mastery of academic discipline and demonstrated commitment to the intellectual growth and development of students.

Michael Appelgate of Alexandria has been elected vice president of the Class of 2008 at Lynchburg College. Appelgate is a 2004 graduate of Hayfield Secondary School and the son of Michael and Doris Appelgate. He is a freshman at Lynchburg College.

Brendon Kent of Alexandria recently participated in varsity Men’s Swimming for Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Kent is a sophomore, specializing in the 100m Backstroke, 100m Butterfly, 200m Medley Relay and 200, Freestyle Relay. He also earned a pair of medals in the dual meet vs. Monmouth College.

Christopher Rodriguez of Alexandria recently received the Wesleyan Marit Award for high overall academic standing for the fall 2004 at North Carolina Wesleyan College. North Carolina Wesleyan College is a four year liberal arts, Methodist affiliated college in Rocky Mountain, N.C.

Kathryn Jensen of Alexandria is currently studying abroad in Sydney, Australia, through the Institute for Study Abroad at Maquarie University. Jensen is studying educational psychology, Chinese calligraphy, language, culture and communication. She is a junior, majoring in psychology. Jansen is a 2002 graduate of Bishop Ireton High School and the daughter of Rick and Peggy Jensen.

Three students from Alexandria are among the 27 students from Marymount University to be selected to the 2005 edition of "Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." Aurore Mam is majoring in Biology and is a tutor at the Learning Resource Center. Ashley Natoli is majoring in Criminal Justice and has a BBA in Management. She is a swimmer and lacrosse player; captain of the swim team; three years Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) scholar athlete and 2003 CAC Unsung Hero. Chris Walker has a BBA in Business Law; four years Admission ambassador; basketball player; CAC scholar athlete, All Capital Athletic Conference. The student were chosen to the list based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.
