Bolling Wins Lt. Gov. Nomination for GOP

Bill Bolling, a conservative state senator from Hanover County, handily defeated Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sean Connaughton Tuesday in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor.

Bolling brought in 57 percent of the state-wide vote. However, Bolling failed to carry Fairfax County, tallying only 41 percent of the county's GOP vote, according to early returns.

Opposition to tax increases was perhaps the most prominent theme of Bolling's primary campaign, with both candidates attempting to portray themselves as the more right-leaning choice.

Bolling will now face Democrat Leslie Byrne, who has served in the U.S Congress and in both houses of the General Assembly. The two candidates will face off in the Nov. 8 general election.
