Candidate Seeks To 'Scooter' to Victory

Riding on bright red scooter, Michael Meunier is traveling door-to-door in the 39th District.

Knocking on as many doors as possible in an electoral district can be tiring work for aspiring politicians.

So Michael Meunier, a Republican challenging Del. Vivian Watts (D) in the 39th District, decided to make things a bit easier for himself and his campaign aides.

He bought three motorized scooters, one of which is bright red and emblazoned with the American flag.

"We were going door-to-door, but we we're getting sweaty because it's so hot," Meunier said, a first-time candidate. "We're determined to knock on every door in the district."

The scooters cost the campaign between $220 and $350 a piece, Meunier said.

Meunier and his two campaign aides typically ride on their scooters through the district in a pack. In each neighborhood, the two aides usually fan out ahead of the candidate and see if anyone wants to talk to him.

"It's going great," he said. "I wasn't sure there would actually be any impact from going door-to-door, but it's been tremendous."

Watts, who has represented the district since 1996, said she has no immediate plans to purchase motorized scooters to assist her door-knocking efforts.

"I always spend my money wisely," she joked. "We're out there in the heat advisories knocking on doors. You can't wimp out."

Three candidates are running in the Nov. 8 election for the 39th District: Watts, Meunier and Richard Herron, an independent green.
