Carmen Shirkey is a Fair Lakes resident whose avid pursuit of her twin hobbies of travel and photography results in award-winning travel photographs. She has recently been honored by the Web site IGOUGO, and she is this week's People Profile.
Number of Years in the Community: Five years.
Family: It's just me.
Education: I am a 1994 graduate of the University of Virginia with two degrees — a bachelor of arts in rhetoric and communication studies, and a bachelor of arts in history.
Current job: Web producer/Web editor
Achievements: I was a 2005 inductee into the IGOUGO Hall of Fame, and won their Outstanding Photography Award in 2004. Also, several of my photos have been published by picture.com
Activities/interests/hobbies: Travel and photography
Favorite place in Fairfax? I am quite fond of the new Fairfax Corner. It's a really cool place to shop or see a movie or eat ice cream.
Community concerns: My biggest concern is that developers keep building more and more houses, but they aren't thinking about what that influx of people will do to our road system and the traffic that is already a thorn in our sides. The local government should make sure that the developers are planning a community — with all of the roads and other systems — and not just building houses.
What brought you to Fairfax? The purchase of my beautiful condo in Fair Lakes. That, and my job.
Community hidden treasure: The libraries. You can be transported anywhere through a book.
Personal goals: To step on the soil of as many countries as I can.
