Air Force Cadet Robert J. Edmonds has completed basic cadet training and earned the rank of cadet fourth class at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.

The cadet is one of more than 1,300 men and women who completed the six-week orientation program. The training prepares cadets to enter their first academic year at the academy.

The cadets completed the training in two phases. Phase one consisted of military and physical preparation, which focused on the transition from civilian to military life. Phase two involved three weeks of field training on the academy grounds to participate in activities to extend their physical limitations and build self and group confidence.

The U.S. Air Force Academy curriculum offers education in the basics, engineering and social sciences, the humanities and 30 other academic majors. At graduation, the cadet receives a bachelor of science degree and a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force.

He is the son of Jim and Fran Edmonds of Newbury Place, Sterling. Edmonds is a 2005 graduate of Potomac Falls High School.

Butt is the son of Arthur and Deborah Butt of Meadow Ridge Court, Sterling, and grandson of Marie Crist of Brookside Terrace, Danvers, Mass. He is a 2005 graduate of Potomac Falls High School.

Leadership Fairfax Inc. announces the members of the LFI Signature Program class of 2006, which will be the 19th class to participate in the leadership-training program built around a comprehensive 10-month curriculum of community issues and skill development. The class of 2006 began their year by selecting the following topics of study: environmental preservation, state legislative process and its impact on Fairfax County, gang prevention/at-risk youth, affordable housing and transportation and civic engagement.

Northern Virginia Family Service announces the recent addition of five new members to the agencyÕs Board of Directors. The new board members are Ronald Hodge, a vice president with Booz Allen Hamilton; Ivor Horn, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor, Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, ChildrenÕs National Medical Center, George Washington University School of Medicine; Ericka Miller, vice president and director, Isaacson, Miller; Danny Vargas, president, VARCom Solutions, LLC; and Jerry Weiss, senior vice president, chief compliance officer, Freddie Mac.

Personnel from the Loudoun County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management have been sent to Mississippi as part of the continuing regional response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf States.

Battalion Chief Joe Bailey is in Harrison County as part of a National Capital Regional Incident Management team assisting in the distribution of food and water. Capt. Justin Green, Lt. Mike Loving, technician Aaron Jacobs and firefighters Richard Bonney and Jackie Shingleton are in Hanock County where they are helping provide basic fire protection services. They are part of a 50-member team of firefighters and paramedics organized by the Northern Virginia Fire Chiefs.

Meanwhile, a team from Loudoun continues to work at the Emergency Operations Center in New Orleans. The team includes Assistant Chief Jack Brown, Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management; Roger Biraben, division director, Mental Health and Substance Abuse,

Department of Mental Health/Mental Retardation/Substance Abuse Services; Kevin Johnson, coordinator, Office of Emergency Management; Don McGarry, chief, Public Works Division, Department of General Services; and John Pumphrey, assistant director, Department of Information Technology.

Meanwhile, Loudoun County Animal Care and Control Officers Janette Reever and Jeanette Farrell are wrapping up their relief efforts in and around Waveland and Biloxi, Miss., where they helped to secure and collect dangerous dogs running at large. They are scheduled to return home this week. Other Department of Animal Care and Control employees who helped deliver much-needed veterinary supplies to the area include Animal Shelter Manager Inga Fricke, Animal Control Officer Donald Longerbeam, and staffers Adrienne Lawson and Aaron Wheatley.
