Clearing Up Hugo's Record

To the Editor:

Politics in Northern Virginia has become unseemly during the past six years and this trend appears to be continuing. In the latest incident, Republican Del. Tim Hugo, in telephone calls recently made throughout his legislative district, was falsely accused of wanting to pollute the Chesapeake Bay. What is the truth?

In the last session of the General Assembly, Hugo voted to appropriate $200 million to clean up the Chesapeake Bay. Two hundred million dollars is a lot of money! Indeed, this was not the vote of a person who wants to pollute the Bay. Moreover, since I know Tim Hugo very well, I am aware of his commitment to the environment. In essence, the telephone calls constituted nothing more than a scurrilous attack on a fine person and, ironically, a delegate who is committed to a clean and healthy environment.

The 2007 elections for the General Assembly will not be held for 16 months, but it seems that the election cycle has already begun. And, regrettably, the truth already appears to be a major casualty in the form of a false allegation about Del. Hugo's record.
