Getting To Know ...

Carolyn Morrison was just installed as the vice president of the Maryland Federated Women's Clubs. Domestic Violence is high on her list of things the community should be aware of. She enjoys spending time with her family and is a longtime resident of the area. She is this week's People Profile.

Number of years in the community. I have lived in the area for 50 years.

Family: My husband and I have two sons, both of whom are Landon High School graduates, and are both dentists; and a daughter-in-law who is a stay-at home-mom with six children. Our daughter is a Holton-Arms graduate and a communications major who is moving back to the area from California. I am the proud grandma of 10 grandchildren — ranging in ages from 1 year to 13 years of age.

Education: I graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in dental hygiene.

Current job/primary occupation? I am still practicing dental hygiene one day a week because my patients won't let me retire. Currently I am also chairman of Maryland Federated Woman's Club (MFWC).

Achievements: I was president of Southern Maryland Dental Hygienist Association; president of Maryland Dental Hygienists Association; served as president of the Chevy Chase Juniors; graduated into the woman's club and was their president; president of the Dental Wives Auxiliary and the Ki-Wives (Kiwanis); arts department chairman for MFWC; and president of the Montgomery County District. I was also the Chairman of the Board of Governors for the over-60 Counseling and Employment Agency. I chaired three successful shamrock luncheons to benefit people over 60. I just finished a two-year term as first vice president of MFWC.

Activities/interests/hobbies? I want to spend more time with my family, especially my 10 grandchildren.

Favorite local restaurant or place in the community? My husband and I enjoy Normandy Farms and Flaps, but I think Congressional has the best chef ever.

What are your community concerns? One community concern is domestic violence. I hope to get MFWC members involved with helping the Betty Ann Kranke Center as part of our program for Domestic Violence. Unfortunately, this is a subject whose time has come. My community concerns, other than domestic violence, involve manners and kindness. What happened to the way we all behaved after Sept. 11? Driving around here is getting to be hazardous. People will just not give a right-of-way or yield on the Beltway.

What brought you here? My husband's career in dentistry brought me here. He has been practicing dentistry in the area for over 50 years.

What community "hidden treasure" do you think more people should know about? Of course people should know about the Federated Women's Clubs. We have a purpose; we do not just eat and have fun.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you "grew up?" When I was younger, I wanted to be a journalist. In fact, I was enrolled at Miami of Ohio as a journalism major when I found out about dental hygiene.
