<sh>McLean Police Issue Summer Security Alert

<bt>Fairfax County Police Officer Tom Black, of the Crime Prevention Unit of the McLean District Station, issued the following security alert to local residents: With the arrival of summer, crimes of convenience have already begun. Please remember to lock your doors and windows whenever you leave home. Please shut your garage door at night and lock all your vehicles either on the street or driveway. There have recently been a number of burglaries where criminals have stolen items from garages at night when the door was left open. Criminals have also checked the door from the garage into the home and when found unlocked have actually entered the home to steal personal items readily accessible. The door from the garage to the home should be secured with a bolt lock. It is also recommend any windows in your garage –– including garage door windows –– have curtains to prevent criminals from looking in your garage for items of

interest. No car in the garage indicates no one is home. For any home security questions please contact the crime prevention office at 703-556-7750.

<sh>'Shut It Down?'

<bt>Fairfax County Police now have a special telephone line in operation, as part of the 'Shut It Down?' campaign. The line allows anyone to anonymously leave messages detailing student events where underage drinking is expected to occur. The Fairfax County Police Traffic Division is providing this powerful tool to teenagers to help prevent underage drinking and driving. The goal behind the program is to provide concerned students and others a method to anonymously let law enforcement know about underage alcohol parties so that steps can be taken to save lives. This program, which will run through the prom and graduation season, was originally created last year in response to feedback from students about what can be done to prevent teenage driving fatalities. Several phone calls were taken during its original use and may have both stopped underage drinking and saved lives. The phone number, 703-246-2333, will be checked daily by traffic division staff. Messages should include the date, location and time of the events. This telephone voice mail system is not meant to take place of citizens calling the emergency dispatch center to report events that are taking place or need immediate police response. This program is for reporting information about these events prior to the event occurring.
