<sh>House Fire

<bt>A fire in the Vienna area at about 11:30 Sunday morning displaced one adult female resident and resulted in an estimated $20,000 damage to the apartment unit, a second-floor unit in a three-story building, according to Lt. Raul Castillo of the Fairfax County Fire Department. The building is located on the 2500 block of Chain Bridge Road. Castillo said investigators determined that the fire originated from food on the stove while no one was home. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced resident.

The Hungry

<bt>For the second year in a row, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will pick up nonperishable food donations left by customer mailboxes throughout the Northern Virginia area. Food will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank and local needy organizations such as daycare centers, nursing homes and faith-based organizations.

The food drive will begin Saturday, March 4 and continue through Saturday, March 11. The food items will be consolidated and then delivered to the Capital Area Food Bank Warehouse in Lorton. Customers may also drop off items for the food drive at local post offices.

<sh>Curves Hosts

Food Drive

<bt>Curves fitness centers, including the one at 8622-C Lee Highway in Merrifield, are collecting groceries for local food banks through March 31. Curves is supporting this food drive by accepting a bag of groceries in lieu of the normal $149 service fee charged to women who join as new members through March 11. Nonperishable groceries can be dropped off by prospective Curves members, current members or anyone interested in contributing to this food drive. Visit www.curvesofarlington.com.

<sh>Public Hearing

On 'Living Wage'

<bt>Fairfax County Supervisor Catherine Hudgins (Hunter Mill-D) will chair a public hearing on a living wage ordinance for the county. Two additional panelists will facilitate the discussion, Jon Liss, organization director of Tenants and Workers United and Hugo Carballo, business manager of Laborers Local 11. Workers and business leaders, attorneys and social service advocates, community leaders and clergy, all have been invited for brief testimony. The hearing will take place Saturday, March 18, 1-3 p.m. at Saint Anthony of Padua Parish, 3305 Glen Carlyn Road, Falls Church.
