Langston Hughes Student Honored
The United States Achievement Academy (USAA) nominated Hadar Ahmed for an English award. Ahmed, a student at Langston Hughes Middle School, is now qualified to win one of four $10,000 scholarships and one of 250 $1,500 scholarships given out by USAA.
Moran To Host Town Hall Meeting
U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-8) will hold a town hall meeting this weekend in Reston. On Saturday morning, May 6, at the Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods, Moran will open a dialogue among residents regarding current issues. The event begins at 9 a.m. and will last until 10:30 a.m. The meeting is part of a town hall series that Moran will host that day. Two other meetings will take place later that day in Falls Church and Alexandria.
Reston Police Officer Recognized
Crime Prevention Officer Katy Fernbacher, who is stationed at the Reston district office, will receive a 26th annual Law Enforcement Award presented by the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. On May 12, Fernbacher will be honored for her work on a routine graffiti case in the Reston and Great Falls area. After following many leads, Fernbacher identified a suspect using the tag, “Borf.” The graffiti tagger, who was subsequently convicted on federal charges, worked throughout the United States and internationally.
Celebration for New Book on Reston
Restonians are invited to a community celebration May 13 to mark the publication of the book, “Reston Town Center: A Downtown for the 21st Century,” which details the inside story about how this downtown changed the rules of traditional suburban development. The book, edited by Alan Ward, a principal architect with Sasaki Associates, highlights the decisions, the people and various turning points that contributed to the creation of the town center. The event, which will include a book signing, will be held at Reston Town Center Square from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Free RCO Concert Coming Soon
Reston Community Orchestra's spring finale concert will be held May 21 at the Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods at 4 p.m. The free concert will feature the orchestra’s young cellist, Eric Perreault, who will perform Lalo's Concerto for Orchestra & Cello. Accessible Housing Forum
The Reston Citizens Association (RCA) is co-sponsoring a community forum on accessible and visitible housing in conjunction with Reston Interfaith The forum, on Monday, May 8 at Lake Anne Community Center at 7 p.m., will focus on how homes in Reston can be adapted to their residents’ future needs to accommodate “aging in place.” The event will also provide information on contractors who have experience in making modifications to facilitate accessibility and visitability.
Correction
The article "Bowman Condos Approved" on page 13 of the April 5 issue had several errors. The photo in the picture was of the E. DeLong Bowman house, however, the approved condos will be placed on the grounds of the A. Smith Bowman House.
The existing 40,000-square-foot office building will be demolished and the Comprehensive Plan amendment which paved the way for the development was approved in 2004.
