SLEEP Talk. The League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area next meeting topic is SLEEP, “Start Later for Excellence in Education Proposal.” Members will discuss the costs of Fairfax County Public Schools modifying its bell schedules to allow high schools to start later, and the implications for health, academic performance, transportation, sports, extra-curricular activities, and families. Maple Avenue Meeting. A kickoff meeting for the Maple Avenue Feasibility Study is being held at 8 p.m. in the council chamber at Town Hall, 127 Center St., S. The purpose of the meeting, to which the public is invited, is to identify key concerns and discuss overall goals. The feasibility study will compare the use of a form-based zoning code — a method of regulating development by controlling physical form primarily, and land use secondarily — and alternatives such as overlay zones, mixed-use zoning and the existing zoning code to determine the most viable options for Maple Avenue between Lawyers Road and Beulah Road. 703-255-6341.

There will be a concert by the Vienna Community Band, and the Legion Auxiliary will place flags on the graves of veterans. From 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Dr. Bruce Hansen, veterinarian specializing in dermatology and allergies, discusses dermatomyositis, pyoderma and mallasezia (yeast infection); the effect of compromised autoimmune systems on skin; the role that a malfunctioning thyroid gland can play on skin conditions; fleas and preventatives; and immune-mediated dermatosis. From 1:30-5 p.m., Cathi Gorman, American Shetland Sheepdog Association President, addresses "Breeding Shelties in the 21st Century." Using live Shelties, Gorman will demonstrate positive aspects as seen through a breeder judge's eyes. She will also discuss basic color genetics and prevailing thinking in the mapping of the canine genome. Cost is $35 for each seminar or $60 for both. Lunch costs $5.
