Babysitters Training, a two-day course for boys and girls ages 12 and older, begins today from 4:30-8:30 p.m. and continues Saturday, May 13 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry St., S.E. A certified American Red Cross instructor will teach basic child care, safety and what to do in emergency situations. Fee is $60 for town residents and $65 for out-of-town participants. Girl Scout Service Unit 50-2 will hold a community rummage sale from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Holly Knoll I subdivision, Cardinal Holly Court in Great Falls, to raise money for the Katrina Relief Effort. SLEEP Talk. The League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area next meeting topic is SLEEP, “Start Later for Excellence in Education Proposal.” Members will discuss the costs of Fairfax County Public Schools modifying its bell schedules to allow high schools to start later, and the implications for health, academic performance, transportation, sports, extra-curricular activities, and families. The organization’s unit meetings will be held during the second week of May at 16 locations throughout Fairfax County. The League’s meetings are free; no registration is required. Maple Avenue Meeting. A kickoff meeting for the Maple Avenue Feasibility Study is being held at 8 p.m. in the council chamber at Town Hall, 127 Center St., S. The purpose of the meeting, to which the public is invited, is to identify key concerns and discuss overall goals. The feasibility study will compare the use of a form-based zoning code — a method of regulating development by controlling physical form primarily, and land use secondarily — and alternatives such as overlay zones, mixed-use zoning and the existing zoning code to determine the most viable options for Maple Avenue between Lawyers Road and Beulah Road. 703-255-6341.

<cal2>Women in Technology (WIT) announced the finalists for the Seventh Annual Women in Technology Leadership Awards. This annual award recognizes women who have exemplified the WIT mission to Connect. Lead. Succeed. The winners will be announced at a banquet and ceremony at the Hilton McLean in McLean, where Maureen Bunyan, anchor for WJLA-TV in Washington, will serve as the mistress of ceremonies. The Vienna Department of Public Works celebrates Public Works Week with an open house at its Northside Property Yard, 600 Mill St., N.E., from 2-6 p.m. All Vienna residents, school and scout groups, and others interested in seeing the facility and a display of Public Works vehicles and equipment are invited. <cal2>Memorial Day ceremony. American Legion Post 180's Memorial Day ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. at Flint Hill Cemetery on Chain Bridge Road in Oakton. There will be a concert by the Vienna Community Band, and the Legion Auxiliary will place flags on the graves of veterans. The Legion will also conduct its annual Poppy Promotion throughout Vienna during the weekend, with proceeds going to veterans' hospitals in Virginia. Call the Post at 703-938-9535.

<cal2>Two Shetland Sheepdog Seminars. From 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Dr. Bruce Hansen, veterinarian specializing in dermatology and allergies, discusses dermatomyositis, pyoderma and mallasezia (yeast infection); the effect of compromised autoimmune systems on skin; the role that a malfunctioning thyroid gland can play on skin conditions; fleas and preventatives; and immune-mediated dermatosis. From 1:30-5 p.m., Cathi Gorman, American Shetland Sheepdog Association President, addresses "Breeding Shelties in the 21st Century." Using live Shelties, Gorman will demonstrate positive aspects as seen through a breeder judge's eyes. She will also discuss basic color genetics and prevailing thinking in the mapping of the canine genome. Cost is $35 for each seminar or $60 for both. Lunch costs $5.
