<sh>Shooting in the Merrifield Area

<bt>On Wednesday, May 24 around 7:15 p.m., a group of people were standing in the 2700 block of Hollywood Road. A car drove up near them, and the passenger of the car shot once into the group. An 18-year-old Falls Church-area man was shot in the upper body and was transported to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries. This case is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or the police non-emergency number at 703-691-2131.

<sh>Leadership Nominations Open

<bt>Leadership Fairfax Inc., based in Vienna, is seeking nominations for the 2006 Northern Virginia Leadership Awards. The Northern Virginia Leadership Awards recognize individuals and organizations in the following categories:

Regional Leadership Award — recognizes an individual or organization for demonstrating leadership toward solving a regional problem in the Northern Virginia area.

Community Partnership Award — recognizes outstanding leadership in the successful creation and accomplishments of a public/private partnership.

Community Trustee Awards — three awards given to an individual, a business and a nonprofit organization that have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the Northern Virginia community.

Educational Leadership Award — recognizes an individual teacher or administrator at the primary or secondary school level who has demonstrated a long-term and consistent pattern of excellent leadership in the education field.

Youth Leadership — recognizes outstanding leadership by an individual under the age of 21 whose service positively influenced the lives of young people by helping them reach their potential to become contributors in the community.

The deadline for nominations is 4 p.m. on Friday, June 23. Nomination forms are available at www.leadershipfairfax.org or by calling 703-752-7555.

<sh>Register with Purchasing Office

<bt>Vienna area businesses are encouraged to offer their goods and services to the Town of Vienna government. The Vienna Purchasing Office is updating its bidders list for the new fiscal year beginning July 1. To have a business placed on the town's bidders list or to update a business's current listing, call the Purchasing Office at 703-255-6359 for an application form, or download the form at www.viennava.gov, and return it by June 30. All current town government bids are posted on the bulletin board in the foyer of Town Hall, 127 Center St., S., and are also available at www.viennava.gov.

<sh>Men's Basketball League

<bt>The Men's Summer Basketball League, sponsored by the Vienna Parks and Recreation Department, runs from June 19 through Aug. 11. Two 10-team divisions will play a round-robin schedule, with the top teams from each division competing in a league championship tournament. The fee is $550 per team plus an additional charge of $20 for each non-Fairfax County player. For more information, call Keith Fees at 703-255-6352 or e-mail fees@vienna.va.us.

<sh>Adult Summer Tennis League

<bt>June 18 is the registration deadline for the Vienna Parks and Recreation Department's Adult Summer Tennis League. League play begins July 1, with men's singles games on Saturdays and women's singles games on Sundays at Glyndon and Meadow Lane Parks. Each participant will play a minimum of seven matches during the season. The fee is $15 for Town of Vienna residents and $20 for nonresidents. <sh>Applications Available for CARE Awards

<bt>Northern Virginia companies can now apply for the 2006 CARE (Companies As Responsive Employers) awards administered by Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS). Applications are available online and must be submitted by June 16.

The CARE Awards recognizes businesses located (not necessarily headquartered) in Northern Virginia that are leaders in promoting a positive work-life balance for employees through company policies and benefits. Since 1992, the CARE Awards have identified the best places to work in Northern Virginia. The award was created not only to give much-deserved recognition to family-friendly companies, but also to encourage and challenge other companies to examine their policies and programs.

The application can be downloaded at www.nvfs.org/careapplication2006.pdf. Applicants are evaluated against other businesses of like size and resources. Winners are recognized at an awards breakfast to be held on Nov. 15 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner.
