<sh>Serious Accident
<bt>A Herndon woman is recovering from serious injuries after her vehicle crossed the center line on Old Ox Road and struck a pickup truck near Dulles.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Tyheita D. Weaver, 32, was southbound on Old Ox Road near Mercure Circle around 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8, when her 2006 Nissan Altima crossed the center line and struck a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup, Dennis L. Swanson Jr., 39, of Winchester, was taken to Fair Oaks Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
Weaver was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
<sh>Recovery Month Awareness
<bt>This September marks the 17th annual celebration of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. A coalition of county groups, including Loudoun County Division of Mental Health & Substance Abuse, Loudoun County Public Schools, Substance Abuse Addiction and Recovery Alliance and individuals from the community, have organized local efforts to increase awareness of substance abuse and treatment options and to celebrate recovery from addiction.
Substance use disorders affect millions of Americans, many of whom are under 21 years old. These disorders include dependence on and abuse of alcohol and illicit drugs, including the nonmedical use of prescription-type drugs.
Anyone concerned about the possibility of drug use, contact Loudoun County Public School Student Services, 571-252-1014, which offers a variety of substance-abuse prevention programs, and/or your school counselor who can connect you with Loudoun County Mental Health/Substance Abuse Services, which provides substance abuse and/or mental health assessments at the school through Student Assistance Services. Loudoun County Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services provides outpatient services, 703-771-5100, and the Community Resource Center, 703-737-8977, provides referrals to private practitioners who specialize in substance abuse treatment.
<sh>Fund-raiser Underway
<bt>Loudoun County citizens are being invited to become associate members of the Virginia Sheriffs' Institute.
Membership appeals go out in the mail and should arrive next week. Membership in the voluntary program is $20 for individuals and $40 for businesses. The funding provides technical resources, training and support on criminal justice issues.
In addition, dues will be used to assist Sheriff's offices throughout Virginia by supporting training and educational programs for Virginia Sheriffs and deputies, and sponsoring educational scholarships for young people attending Virginia's colleges and universities.
The contributions are tax-deductible and upon receipt of the dues members will receive a membership card, a bumper sticker, a decal and a year subscription to The Virginia Sheriff magazine.
